Wake Rocks Pass High Point 71-60

Thanks to Chase Fischer, scored 15 points

USPA NEWS - Freshmen Aaron Rountree and Tyler Cavanaugh added 11 points a piece for the Demon Deacons (4-4), who snapped a two-game losing streak with a win that was much closer than the final score indicated. Rountee and Cavanaugh had a great game!!!

They trailed for only 20 seconds of the second half, but needed some big shots from Fischer - who finished 5-of-8 from beyond the arc - and a late stand to avoid their first loss to High Point since 1934-35 - and their 14th loss to a school from outside the six BCS conferences under third-year coach Jeff Bzdelik.

High Point built a 41-32 rebounding advantage but turned it over 18 times, and Wake Forest turned those miscues into 16 points.

"For Chase and Aaron and the team to play, everyone's going to have their days," forward Travis McKie said. "You get everybody to come together, when ACC play starts, we're going to be a pretty good team."
Freshman John Brown had 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Allen Chaney added 10 rebounds for the pesky Panthers (4-4), who have lost three of four. They only led once in the second half but kept things tight before fading in the final 5 minutes.

Brown put on quite a show in his eighth career game, reaching 20 points for the fourth time while finishing with his first double-double on 12-of-22 shooting. His open-court dunk pulled them to 59-54 with about 5:15 left.
Bzdelik called a timeout and had his defense double-down on Brown. High Point followed with four consecutive empty possessions while the Demon Deacons gradually rebuilt their lead.

After C.J. Harris beat the Panthers downcourt for a layup off an inbounds pass with 3 1/2 minutes left, Rountree gave them their first double-figure lead with a free throw with 3:06 left that made it 64-54.

High Point didn't get closer than eight the rest of the way, and Fischer's dagger 3 with 1:20 left put Wake Forest up 69-58.

"Last year, I was pretty inconsistent at times - and young, and I learned a lot from that," Fischer said.
Fischer countered with a 3-pointer roughly 20 seconds later, and added another one 2 minutes after that to make it 40-37 and put the Demon Deacons ahead to stay.

"To see him hit shots like that really opens it up for everybody," Bzdelik said.
