Secretary-General calls

USPA NEWS - Hungary: Secretary-General calls on the Government and Parliament to postpone voting on constitutional amendments. In a statement released today calls the Secretary General of the Government and Parliament in Hungary to postpone the scheduled for Monday vote on constitutional amendments proposed.
So they can be examined by the Venice Commission.
"I have concerns about whether the constitutional amendments with the principles enshrined in the Council of Europe Statute rule of law are compatible. The Hungarian government will apply the transitional provisions that have been repealed by the Constitutional Court, again. This gives the impression that the government is using its two-thirds majority on the decision of the Constitutional Court intends to ignore, so the fundamental democratic principle of checks and balances could be jeopardized.
It is an important and complex issue that needs to be carefully examined by experts. Consequently, the opinion of the Venice Commission would be required.
Furthermore, I am concerned that this major constitutional changes to be already decided next Monday, which leaves no room for an inspection by the experts or for due process in Hungary.
I therefore call on the Hungarian government and the President of the Hungarian Parliament on to postpone the decision of the constitutional amendments, so they can be assessed by the Venice Commission before they are adopted. I am convinced that the Venice Commission will seek to examine the text as soon as possible, "said the Secretary General.
