Catalonia is headed for a regional early elections

The time is running out

USPA NEWS - Catalonia is increasingly about celebrating a new regional elections to unblock the political impasse in which this Spanish region lives since independence leaders began a process that has not the support of the majority of society.
The two main Catalan independence forces, the anti-capitalist party CUP and the nationalist coalition Junts pel Si have made little progress in negotiations since last November 9, when held in Catalonia regional elections that gave victory to Junts pel Si but without the absolute majority he needs to govern and to declare independence. That absolute majority achieved with the support of the CUP, but there are an insurmountable obstacle: while Junts pel Si remains steadfast in its claim that the new president of the regional Government of Catalonia must be Artur Mas the CUP will not accept for being the president who approved the social cuts in Catalonia and belong to a party, Democratic Convergence of Catalonia, prosecuted for corruption.
Since November 9, the CUP has supported Junts pel Si in the adoption of a resolution of the regional Parliament of Catalonia declared open the process of independence and was challenged by the Spanish Government to the Constitutional Court. But when it comes to support the candidate of Junts pel Si for the presidential role of the regional Government of Catalonia, Artur Mas, both formations have become strong in their opposing positions and initiated an exchange of proposals that, far from approach them, threaten to lead to early elections due to the lack of an agreement.
On Tuesday, Junts pel Si reiterated that Artur Mas is the only candidate for president of the Government of Catalonia. In the afternoon, the CUP announced that on December 27 held a general assembly of its members to decide on their support for the candidacy of Mas. The bases of the anti-capitalist formation last weekend spoke out against this support and nothing suggests that they will change their mind between now and December 27.
The danger is that December 27 will only be 14 days deadline for reaching an agreement. If not, they will hold elections in March 2016 and two weeks seem little time to negotiate an agreement have not been able to achieve in nearly two months of dialogue. Both sides blame the lack of agreement and mutually accountable to provoke early elections that nobody wants because after the show because it is not certain that the independence will win a new Catalan elections.
Junts pel Si threatens to paralyze the independence process if no agreement and CUP accused the Catalan nationalists of not taking the necessary steps to get the process moving forward. And while the Catalan society views Artur Mas obsessed with staying in power, even at the cost to discredit his Government and bury Democratic Convergence of Catalonia. The party that contributed to the Spanish transition to democracy and the stability of national governments, is now beset by Justice, it has its headquarters and seized seems to have become a drag on the nationalist leaders.
